Accessibility

I have students with visual impairments and other disabilities, and I have cystic fibrosis myself. Accessibility has never been an abstract question here. This page says what I actually do about it, and what to tell me when it is not enough.

  • Nothing on this site is set below 16 pixels, and most body text is larger
  • Text and background colours are chosen to meet the WCAG AA contrast standard, not to look close enough
  • Images carry alt text describing what is in them
  • Headings are structured so a screen reader can navigate the page by them, and numbers that are data are not disguised as headings
  • Form fields have labels that are read aloud even where they are not shown on screen
  • Pages work at phone width without sideways scrolling
  • Course materials use the same large, high-contrast text
  • Support sessions are recorded with transcripts, so you can find a topic by timestamp instead of scrubbing through video
  • Recordings play at adjustable speed
  • Live sessions are scheduled in CET, which is the morning across the Americas
  • Students in Asia and the Pacific get at least one session a month at a time that works where they are
  • Everything live is also available recorded, for anyone who cannot attend
